This virus is a trojan that’s singly responsible for infecting over 80,000 machines since 2014 and that number is expected to continue to rise. IBM has even reported a case where this trojan was responsible for stealing over 1million dollars from targeted organizations (1).
This highly capable banking trojan is considered one of the worst and best in existence. It works by tricking users into giving VXers their banking info, resulting in unsuspecting shoppers’ money going straight into the VXer’s accounts. Dyre is found on banking websites and is a service network that anyone can buy and use.It attacks the device’s code configuration file, putting online bankers at risk of losing their funds and device owners at risk of being caught up in a bot-net.
Thankfully for some, Dyre can only penetrate Windows operating systems, soothers like OS X and Linux are safe.
Still, Dyre is very up to date and can even attack Microsoft’s new Edge browser despite its security upgrades, says Andra Zahria (2). Zahria is a security specialist from Heimdal Security and believes that typical security software may not save your computer from this dangerous trojan because VXers have built a patch for Windows 10 and Edge users.
According to Zahria (3),the authors of this particular trojan use a “spray-and-pray” spam campaign to get the trojan out. This means they send Dyre to tons of random recipients in the hopes that they will engage it to become its next victims.
Online shoppers using Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and the out-dated Internet Explorer on a Windows OS need to be cautious because these browsers do not automatically protect you from trojans like Dyre. So if you plan on shopping online any time soon, please keep up on the latest developments of this trojan and others. Be aware of suspicious emails and unusual activity on your accounts, and make sure you visit us here at The Security Bulldog often to stay up to date!
